‘You have 3,465 friends!’ Really?

There could be one in a million chance you haven’t heard of MySpace, Facebook and Orkut. You probably have your own profile on one or more of these and other social networking sites. As though it weren’t enough, more such sites spring up every day promising a different dimension to social networking. However, have you ever thought about the risk of identity theft and stalking. You ought to take these basic precautions:

  • Check the website’s privacy policy. I know it’s boring to read those lines but some sites allow unrestricted access to posted content. If possible, restrict access to your profile so only close friends can view your information. Infact some lesser known sites that spring up from nowhere could be crafted to harvest your personal details only to sell them to marketing gurus.
  • Seriously consider omitting your full name, address, phone number, pets’ and maiden names or any personal details that could allude to passwords.
  • Choose a username that doesn’t contain personal info.
  • Be aware that personal photos can be altered.
  • The Internet is open to the public so only post stuff you don’t mind strangers knowing. After all, you can’t take it back — even if you delete it, older versions may exist on other people’s computers.
  • Don’t believe everything you read online. Report anything or anyone suspicious to the website or to your local police.
